<image:title>Stories - Seaweed - Seaweed</image:title>
<image:caption>Art Photography & words by Naomi Hill The first time I encounter seaweed is in the hand of my best friend’s mother. She offers me a piece. I taste it while my friend watches carefully for signs of rejection. Laver is salty and smells strange. I don’t know if I like it or not. This is while I’m still a firm believer in lakes and clarity. I spend my childhood summers on Georgian Bay, the northeastern arm of Lake Huron. The water is clear and calm. We examine schools of minnows and pink, disgruntled crayfish. I can see the lake floor. Origin: 1. (also origins) The point or place where something begins, arises, or is derived. 2. A fixed point from which coordinates are measured.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Seaweed</image:title>
<image:caption>Translucent: 1. Transmitting and diffusing light so that objects beyond cannot be seen clearly. 2. Free from disguise or falseness. Along the horizon, a ship glides out of view. Cruise or cargo? A child crouches over a tidal pool and takes inventory. I walk toward the sea, food from the hand of my friend’s mother and a garden moving with the current against my skin.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Seaweed</image:title>
<image:caption>Perception: 1. Awareness of something through the senses. 2. The way in which something is regarded, understood, or interpreted. The summer that I turn 12 my family drives across Canada until we reach the East Coast. The wind is cold, and we shiver into the Atlantic. One hundred silken leaves wind around my calves, a garden moving with the current against my skin. I yank my legs away. My sisters swim farther out. For the rest of our trip I watch from the shore. Once, we come across a small lake full of the soft, waving stems. At home my mother has planted long, ordered rows of vegetables next to our house. It’s my job to pull the weeds</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Seaweed</image:title>
<image:caption>Delicate: 1. Very fine in texture or structure; of intricate workmanship or quality. 2. Easily broken or damaged; fragile. The ascophyllum nodosum has dried to a perfect black matte; featherlight iron. I balance the warm, smooth sculpture on my open palm. This is when I’ve moved to Nova Scotia with my husband and our two children. Everything I hold is fragile. My son is unwell. I carry the seaweed home and place it in the open mouth of a small white plaster horse hanging on the blue wall. It’s odd to hang seaweed on a wall, in the mouth of a plaster horse, unless you’re in love with the tangled shape of it. Love conquers odd. My son grows strong.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Film, Travel Photography, film and words by James Aiken Featured in Volume 3° I've always thought that life is punctuated by the big decisions you make. That when you look its the times when you have given everything to something you love that stand out as waypoints. The Oaken Yarn is one such moment for me. It represents a decision to pursue the parts of life that truly inspire me, to make irresponsible decisions and risk everything on an idea. There has never been a fixed destination or goal, but I hope to immerse myself in the truly wild places and where possible convey that sense of wonder through storytelling and film-making</image:caption>

<image:caption>Travel Photography & words by Toby Mitchell Featured in Volume 1° Cool mid January air ran through my fingers as I walked to the end of Venice Beach Pier. Contentment consumed my soul as what I had imagined for years and reality aligned for the first time; The Californian dream was no longer a distant hope of adventure, but my present, right in front of me. The pastel sunset hazed the Malibu mountains as the soundscape of rollerblades and surfing brought peace to my world. A rare moment of silence. My battle to put down the camera was no longer a struggle. All I wanted was to enjoy what was before me; breathe in and be still.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Travel Photography and words by David Alvarado Big cities were once a place that harbored an energy unparalleled by what I could find in the developed world. Motion, everything was in constant motion. Even the inanimate came to life as millions of people raced through the grid from one place to the next. Who could rest when there are empires to build? After a few years in New York City, I was left emotionally and mentally drained. But in 2014, an escape was discovered in the back of a coach class cabin on a flight to the Pacific Northwest.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Blue Basin</image:title>
<image:caption>Not much time had passed before I threw myself into the elements. Or I should say, before the elements took hold of me. Over the years I became accustomed to the drought that consumed my homeland in the Southwest. Gradients of golden hills and washed out skies quickly transformed into hues of mossy greens and deep turquoise. The overabundance of water flowed everywhere and became the life source for the work I would create. It is water’s unrelenting energy and meditative qualities that compelled me toward finding a similar harmony within my personal and creative lives. Not too long after the new year, I found myself isolated in the deserts of eastern Oregon. In it’s own reclusion is Blue Basin; a site that calls wanderers like myself out of their comfort zones and into prehistoric landscapes far-removed from civilization. There lie a mixture of colorful strata and a more complex geology. To be in the presence of towering celadonite giants is rather bizarre. Though the basin was formed millions of years ago by a flow of highly pressurized water forcing its way through ash beds of alkaline, that energy still remains. A scientist I am not, but to appreciate such a spectacle doesn’t require the occupation. Perhaps it’s the absence of water that separates Blue Basin from other monuments found throughout the Pacific Northwest. Or so I thought. Out from under a barren desert floor, a stream of pastel waters penetrated through the surface; a testament to the resiliency of nature. That life source, indeed, will come through in the most unlikely of places.</image:caption>

<image:caption>(droy-myr, Icelandic for dream) Photography & words by Mitchell Hollander I would have never thought, in a million years, that I would travel to such a mystical place like Iceland. As soon as our flight landed, Tobias (my fiancé) and I got right on the road. Ecstatic and eager to explore, we headed straight to the city of Reykjavik. We hoped to find some breakfast and some much-needed coffee. As we started exploring the city, hail began to fall, and the winds picked up. Eventually, we realized that a storm was brewing, and we would be unable to proceed with our plans for the day. Luckily we planned to have an extra day for rest and recuperation, so we decided to relax and catch up on some sleep that evening.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Draumur</image:title>
<image:caption>The next morning, we were fully rested and anxious to get back on the road. Our next destination was the small town of Vik, along the southern coast of Iceland. As we drove along the Ring Road and took in the beautiful landscape, we encountered Icelandic horses and sheep. At this point, we decided to pull over and take a few photos. We felt like we were in another world. Seeing the horses graze below snow covered mountains and sheep scurry over hill tops with waterfalls in the distance was other worldly. Over the course of our trip, we stuck mainly to the southern coast and made one additional dash towards the northwest. Essentially pulling over at every waterfall, beach, cliff side, architecturally interesting looking house, and every lagoon that we came across. It also helped that we made a Google Map with all the locations we planned to visit on it. The whole trip was exhausting but worth every trek. As our adventure came to an end, we packed up our things, said our farewells, and boarded the plane home. The ride home gave us time to reflect on our journey, contemplating through photographs we've taken and the memories we've made. In the moment, our whole adventure felt like it could have lasted an eternity but as we got back to our everyday lives and routines, it felt like it could have been a dream.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Travel Photography & words by Eduardo Cerruti & Stephanie Draime Sitting in our rented Land Rover Defender, I gaze around in awe as we drive through Iceland’s dramatic landscapes. As we continue to follow the road, the feeling of remoteness is present and all that is living are the scattered white dots painted across the green mountains, also known as sheep. Without an itinerary, we parked our home (car) at campsites or off the road and disappeared into nature. In this fast-paced world, Iceland’s bare nature and vast stretch allow for a slow living experience. Waking up to the sunrise and a cup of strong black coffee, we continued around the ring road, drifting off then and there, to find new sceneries and mysterious lands all around.</image:caption>

White Charcoal naturally purifies water by adsorbing chlorine and adding minerals to it; softening its taste and turning it into mineral water. In collaboration with Matias Moellenbach, Sort Of Coal combined the ancient Japanese tradition of Kishu Binchotan with elements of contemporary Danish design.</image:caption>

These new works by the artist Satsuki Shibuya are part of an emerging series Iro Wo Kiku (Listening to Colors). A continuing exploration of movements, vibrations, rhythms, patterns and energies, Shibuya translates the unseen world of sound into visible shapes and colors. Questioning the role of belief systems in our own perceived realities, these works are a collection of studies, searches and examinations through observation.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Palau de Casavells - Palau de Casavells</image:title>
<image:caption>Art, Interior Design Photography & words by Carla Step Located in a small village in el Baix Empordà, in the province of Girona, Palau de Casavells is a historic building whose origins date back to the fourteenth century. Fully restored, the space is home to the Galeria Miquel Alzueta in the catalan ampurdan, housed in a masia, a type of rural construction common to all the old Crown of Aragon. I discovered it last summer while exploring the tiny old town of Casavells that seemed to be the middle of nowhere. It’s quite unlikely one would ever come across it unless introduced by someone. Surprisingly that applies for the Catalans too but it’s truly one of the most magical towns I’ve ever seen in Catalonia. You can simply breath the authenticity of it when walking through the streets.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Photography by Lydia Harper Words by Ashley Heather & Wass Skin Jewellery, Skincare, Fashion Ashley Heather I have always been inspired by both the majesty and understated beauty of this fragile blue green planet of ours. I believe in quality, honesty to materials and doing things differently. I believe companies can do more and be more. All ‘ashley heather’ jewellery is handcrafted in our Woodstock work+shop using precious metals reclaimed from circuit boards by a small refinery right here in South Africa. We care about every aspect of the craft and are constantly striving for the most sustainable studio practices from the manufacturing processes right through to the packaging. We craft every piece using age old silversmithing techniques combined with contemporary designs pared down to their essential qualities. The simplicity of the designs allows the material, craftsmanship and the wearer to shine.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Design & words by Yellow Nose Studio Photography by Bennie Julian Gay Every Yellow Nose design is a quest for the perfect balance between the organic and inorganic, the logical and emotional, hand craftsmanship and industrial design. The studio recently introduced their new N-02 collection bringing the lightness and playfulness of a breezy afternoon tea session to life using solid earth materials in a modern yet elegant way: wood for the pagoda box inspired furniture and a ceramic tea set inspired by the Mono-ha movement. The furniture allows you to flip, turn, pull, take apart and reconstruct but most importantly it allows you to discover and imagine. Hidden spaces in the the stools contain our nature-like inspired tableware with its texture imitating the grain on gravels. This is a collection of interdependency between our hardheaded materials and the gentle use of colour, creating a breath of calm and delightfulness.</image:caption>

We kindly invite you to explore a few of our favourites: Bobby Mills Join woodworker Bobby Mills, who we had the pleasure of having a part of Volume 4°, as he brings his workshop to the New Road Residence. His handcrafted vessels and furniture are on show alongside a live demonstration of how he creates his pieces on a traditional woodturning lathe. Each piece Mills creates begins with a piece of wood that has been locally and sustainably sourced from conservation projects or windfall from one of the UK’s ancient woodlands. He works intuitively and seeks to engage with the natural lines and structures within the wood, whether it be in creating a vessel, stool or chair.</image:caption>

The traditional process of shou-sugi-ban, otherwise known as yakisugi, is a technique originating in Japan in the 18th century which involves the slight charring of the surface of wood. Although it carries a strong cultural significance, this exhibition comes from a clear Western perspective. Invited artists were asked to consider the process of scorching in their practice and how in turn that reflects upon the material.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Film, History Looking for Langston, 1989. In celebration of the LGBT+ history month, we kindly invite you to join us on a poetic journey through Isaac Julien’s film Looking for Langston, breaking down traditional divisions between different art forms. The film explores Black, queer desire in a setting which has no clear time or place. It brings together poetry and image to look at the private world of the Black artists and writers who were part of the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s. The film begins with a recording of a radio broadcast made in tribute to US poet and social activist Langston Hughes after his death in 1967. A cast of mourners gathers at an imagined version of Hughes’s funeral, with Julienplaying the part of the deceased poet in his coffin. The camera moves to a bar scene, set somewhere between a 1920s speakeasy and a 1980s nightclub. Men in black tie gather and tenderly partner up to dance or sit with a drink or cigarette.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Photography and words: Lydia Harper Location: Knysna, South Africa The effects of South Africa run deeper than the slight twang left behind in my English accent. My first visit was pivotal; a marker in my life with a distinct before and after. I ended up in Knysna by chance. With no expectations I stumbled into this small coastal town and felt as though I had found my place in the world. There was an energy that aligned with my own, in the people and the landscapes, and it has pulled me back time and time again. This is the place that changed me, that became a home and inspired a career.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In that sleepy town by the sea, I found a slower, more considered way of life. People had time for each other and they wanted to spend that time outdoors. Surrounded by ocean, forests and mountains, there was a shift in my own mindset and I gained an appreciation for nature that I never had before. Wild and intricate plants, crashing tides and animals from story books; it was a new world to me and I wanted to experience it all. The best days were the simple ones, those spent on dirt roads and empty beaches, or a slow morning and a river swim. I fell easily into the daily routine of going out to shoot at sunset. With a camera on the passenger seat, the windows down and my hand dancing through the salty air, those evening drives to the ocean were my sanctuary. I didn't know it at the time but that was the beginning of my journey as a photographer. Slowly I taught myself how to shoot, to look for textures, movement and light. I often miss the simplicity of those days, back when it wasn’t “work”, just a love of the process and a way to document my days. But I owe those landscapes everything, and know that my work will always be shaped by that time.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - The Place That Made Me</image:title>
<image:caption>Water and seascapes have remained a recurring thread in my images but on a personal level those shorelines were an escape; restorative and calming they were my place for reflection and perspective. I know am not alone in feeling this, many of us speak of that intrinsic connection to water and its effects on our wellbeing and creativity. I spent a lot of my time alone on the road and found a certain beauty in discovering the area by myself. My endless missions to take photos lead me to places the locals had never heard of, to abandoned cabins, lost quarries and beaches they didn't recognise. I learnt the roads like the back of my hand and thought of those landscapes as though they were my own. Solo travel taught me to trust my instincts, to enjoy the solidarity and to build a relationship with a land and its people so far from my roots. I made lifelong friends and lost others along the way, fell in love and allowed it break me. Like the ebb and flow of the tide, some of those losses were gentle and easy on me, others crashed hard and pulled me under. Destructive but beautiful, I came out of it stronger; grateful for the lessons, the friendships and the memories</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - The Art Relief Series</image:title>
<image:caption>Inspired by old plaster reliefs that I had been experimenting with in the past, I started researching shapes, materials and (non) colours. For the Relief series I did a study of shapes, drawings and sketches in many combinations. I drew several shapes on one big piece of paper and started cutting them into pieces. I wanted to create a personal puzzle, a playful Art series that could be mixed and matched by each individual’s imagination. The challenge was to keep those shapes simple. I puzzled for days to get what I felt was the right combination. And there they were; pieces of The Shapes series so far, both together and apart. A little bit later on, I discovered a combination of plaster and cotton fabric to create textured shapes on moulds. I also found out that this mixture got very firm when using layers. The amazing thing about this material is that it looks fragile, but in fact is pretty strong. To connect these layers, the cotton fabric-plaster combination is dipped into water, creating a sticky paste. Then, this layer dries for a while before I apply the next. After the last layer is put into place, the final work reveals the structure of the raw fabric underneath each layer, giving the piece it’s authentic look.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - The Art Relief Series - The Art Relief Series</image:title>
<image:caption>Artwork, photography & words: July Adrichem Shapes 1–6 is an abstract and playful series of reliefs. The individual shapes converge into one piece of Art, being together apart. The Shapes series will be extended with more variety in the future, in search of a composition that symbolizes life at the present time. Nothing ever stays the same, does it? It’s ever changing in perspective and composition, and certainly doesn’t get old. I’ve always been drawn to Abstract and Modern Art. Get this right: when Art looks simple, the process behind it usually isn’t at all. I believe that is exactly what Art’s about; exploring complexity and depth. Research and experiments give me so much good stuff to work with.</image:caption>

Glas-allt-Sheil is a bothy based in the Balmoral Estate (Cairngorms, Scottish Highlands), on the shores of Loch Muick to be precise. This bothy is owned by Queen Elizabeth II, however was built by Queen Victoria in 1868. <image:caption>A Study 001 begins its journey on the outskirts of Copenhagen. Surrounded by the smell of steaming hot glass against timber moulds - the relentless heat of the furnace, you will find the master glass blower Anders Raad hard at work. His workshop stands as a reminder of the once thriving industry within Denmark. While other artisans have dissipated, Anders’ unique understanding of glass allows him to remain relevant and revered in the industry today. A Study 001 brings together Anders Raad with up and coming Danish designer Linnea Ek Blæhr. With Anders being a family friend of Linnea’s parents, their friendship is a testament to the power of close collaboration. An understanding of each others role; the designer to challenge the artisan, the artisan to assist and advise – ultimately bringing to life a truly special object.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Blæhr Vase tests the boundaries of mouth blown glass with a timber moulded form that grows with each edition. An organic object that pushes and pulls the hot glass to take a unique and irregular form. Reflections hit the undulating exterior of the vase; complete with bubbles and streaks lifted from the timber mould, to create a centrepiece with depth and character. “The first in our A Study series, the Blæhr Vase reminds us of why we founded New Works. A love of mind and material united, the artisans hand and the honesty of quality craftsmanship. The series presents a safe space to challenge the industry and to follow our passions.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Anima - Anima</image:title>
<image:caption>Concept, Design, Research and Development, Production: Kosuke Araki Anima - Memorial Service is a series of tableware handcrafted from food waste and Urushi, Japanese lacquer, for rethinking our relationship with nature. Through continuous experiments of the Anima project, it has got several different finishing options depending on preferences: using powder of carbonised waste makes the result complete black. On the other hand, using non-carbonised one, which is just powder of dried waste, results in very dark brown (almost black) due to oxidisation of Urushi and shows brighter brown when exposed to strong light like sunlight. 'Ingredients' can be varied: if you are vegetarian or vegan, they can be made without including any materials derived from animals. One of the ideas lying behind this project is tribute to 'wasted’ lives of vegetables and animals. That is why, this tea or coffee service is named ‘memorial service.’</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Anima</image:title>
<image:caption>Food is not a thing but life. We eat life for our existence. However, for lack of appreciation, we 'consume' life at a huge industrial scale as well as a small domestic scale, disposing of it in landfills. While developing this project, Kosuke kept a record of amounts of food waste produced from his house, only including non-edible parts such as rind, peel, calyxes, shells and bones. Their blackness derives from their body material, charcoal of vegetable waste. Mixture of the charcoal, some animal materials and Urushi is moulded into a shape. The addition of Urushi gives a polish as well as practical strength. Historically, Urushi craft has a close relationship with food – leftovers of a meal. For example, rice, tofu or albumen is mixed with Urushi to adjust its viscosity for making sticky glue or textures. Kosuke revisits this food-related aspect in a contemporary context, making the collection entirely from wasted food. Like the cremation of the body, the 'waste' is carbonised and reincarnated into something else, showing that what is often regarded as 'ugly' can be turned into something beautiful and precious. Kosuke hopes this project serves an opportunity of reflecting consumers' habits of daily consumption. Would serving food on these tableware help consumers to be re-aware of what they are consuming is 'life'?</image:caption>

<image:caption>Each ‘bather’ is made from tulip wood which is hand-turned before being individually finished by hand with a stone composite. The stools, which range in height from 65cm to 75cm, are then topped with a cushioned layer made from a textured wool and cotton bouclé cloth from London-based textile studio, Tibor’s, Wellington collection. "Exploring form, material and an emotive response was at the forefront of designing these sculptural stools," added von Stein. "We worked with fantastic craftsmen to master the challenging art of curves, resulting in a free-flowing and tactile nature."</image:caption>

<image:caption>Design: Sella Concept Photography: Genevieve Lutkin The ‘Ladies Pond’ collection, created by a London design studio Sella Concept, comprises of three curvaceous stools, Bather 1, 2 and 3, in the shade of the pond’s jade-green, mossy waters, in tribute to Hampstead’s ladies pond’s vivacious women. The studio headed by Tatjana von Stein and Gayle Noonan has previously created bespoke furniture for many of its interior design projects, but the bar stools are its first commercially available products. "Our motivation surfaced as a result of a gap in the market for a unique and stylish bar stool – an item that we've repeatedly struggled to find," explained Noonan. "We love the idea that a piece of furniture can live a lifetime in a house. Introducing a Sella piece that has longevity in a home or commercial space is a beautiful idea for us."</image:caption>

<image:caption>The latest edition of The Broad is a temple to craftsmanship. Made from the finest heart oak and handcrafted in our London workshop, The Broad is suitable for use in a wide range of interiors as a freestanding island or wall standing unit. With an integrated extractor removing the need for a cooker hood and its generous size The Broad is a statement piece for any space. Ebonised oak exterior, natural oak interior, black Paperstone coutertop, black sink and tap, black induction hob with downdraft extraction. The smaller edition of the Note Table is designed with the same simple and bold proportions. It features a solid wood coopered base and solid wood top, built from the finest material and handcrafted to last a lifetime. The larger edition of the Low Back Chair barstool is a testament to simplicity and craftsmanship, handturned on a traditional wood lathe from a deep walnut. It is constructed with split tenon joinery and finished with wood oil.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Rectangular slabs and plinths form the foundational component of each object: Two lounge chairs, a floor lamp and three vases form the building blocks of a living space intended for contemplative solitude. Resolute in their solidity, they set a tone of reassuring consistency — steadfast as pillars, they are anchor points between which the body pivots and pauses. Materiality is integral to N-04. The malleable characteristics of each material — plaster, wood, clay — are brought to the fore. Coatings are natural, textural inconsistencies are respected, and finishes, in the case of the vases, are left to chance. Traditional construction techniques originating in the designers’ Taiwanese heritage and Japanese influences are reinterpreted together with the ceramicist Jui-Chu Wang and design studio Kreadiano Objects. Commanding in their presence, N-04’s objects have a graphic, geometric air, creating the illusion of a two-dimensional image when viewed face on. This effect is captured in a black and white editorial series by the photographer Bennie Julian Gay, who has cast each of Yellow Nose Studio’s previous collections in a contemplative light.</image:caption>

<image:caption>An old apron hangs from the corner of his door depicting the same distinct colours of his works but instead offer a smudged version around the pocket. It has come up in a few conversations as of late, people who live in their homes reflecting that of their doings in their professional lives. Tangye is an archetype of that. A man who embodies an artistic approach with all that he does and collects. It was a huge privilege to capture his personal space that I now share with the readers of this magazine.</image:caption>
