New Works, a Copenhagen based design house, has spent the past five years refining a collection of sculptural objects built on their core values and focused on honest materials paired with expert craftsmanship, alongside experimental production techniques that retain the tactility of each material. “To take this even further, we seek to discover what these values mean to us away from the push and pull of the industry, the sales figures and production lines. To focus on what makes honest objects truly special.”

A Study 001 begins its journey on the outskirts of Copenhagen. Surrounded by the smell of steaming hot glass against timber moulds - the relentless heat of the furnace, you will find the master glass blower Anders Raad hard at work. His workshop stands as a reminder of the once thriving industry within Denmark. While other artisans have dissipated, Anders’ unique understanding of glass allows him to remain relevant and revered in the industry today. A Study 001 brings together Anders Raad with up and coming Danish designer Linnea Ek Blæhr. With Anders being a family friend of Linnea’s parents, their friendship is a testament to the power of close collaboration. An understanding of each others role; the designer to challenge the artisan, the artisan to assist and advise – ultimately bringing to life a truly special object.

The Blæhr Vase tests the boundaries of mouth blown glass with a timber moulded form that grows with each edition. An organic object that pushes and pulls the hot glass to take a unique and irregular form. Reflections hit the undulating exterior of the vase; complete with bubbles and streaks lifted from the timber mould, to create a centrepiece with depth and character. “The first in our A Study series, the Blæhr Vase reminds us of why we founded New Works. A love of mind and material united, the artisans hand and the honesty of quality craftsmanship. The series presents a safe space to challenge the industry and to follow our passions.”
